Fort Campbell, Kentucky, is a 105,068-acre institution, and home of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), the 5th Special Forces Group, and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne). The 101st, known as the "Screaming Eagles," is the only air assault division in the US Army. Fort Campbell lies on the Kentucky-Tennessee border between the towns of Hopkinsville, KY and Clarksville, TN, and is about 60 miles northwest of Nashville.
The Fort itself was opened in 1942 and was named after William B. Campbell, a Tennessee statesman and Brigadier General of the United States Volunteers during the Civil War. Although nearly two-thirds of the 105,000 acres of post are actually in Tennessee, the post office is located in Kentucky, and the identification lies with that state. The 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles stationed at Fort Campbell are members of the only air assault division in the world, hence the designation 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). The designation indicates that the helicopter is the primary means of transportation for the division.
Fort Campbell, as well as boasting its own recreational activities, shopping, schools, and hospital, is also only five miles from all the urban activities in Clarksville, and ideally located within easy access to the ample outdoors activities available in southern Kentucky and northern Tennessee such as the "Land Between the Lakes", Dunbar State Park, as well as others. In addition, the urban nightlife, dining, music, and shopping found in Nashville, is only an hour or so drive away. Besides the air transportation for military personnel available on the base, residents of Fort Campbell can take advantage of a shuttle service between Fort Campbell and Nashville International Airport. Also all the public transportation services of Clarksville (which is only 5 miles away) is available for Fort Campbell residents.

The schools serve approximately 4,700 students yearly in eight schools, which are staffed by approximately 375 teachers.
